Orner Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

This is the family pumpkin chocolate chip cookie recipe. I wrote it down in October 2018 and had emailed it around once, and that email turned out to be the only copy. Now it lives here, where I can find it next fall.

These are soft, cakey cookies. The dough is sticky and the cookies don’t spread much, so they come out roughly the shape you drop them in.

Makes 4 dozen. The recipe doubles easily, and a double batch uses up a whole can of pumpkin and a whole bag of chocolate chips.

Preheat the oven to 375°F. You can do all of this in a stand mixer, in this order.

Cream together

  • ½ cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
  • 1 cup brown sugar

Add and mix

  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup canned pumpkin (half a 15 oz can)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Add and mix

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Mix until just combined

  • 2 cups flour

Mix until just combined

  • 2 cups (half a bag) chocolate chips

Bake

The dough will be sticky. Drop it by spoonfuls onto a cookie sheet and bake at 375°F for 8 to 10 minutes, a little longer if needed, until the tips turn golden brown.
